Ready, Set, Run: A Beginner's Guide to Building a Running Habit

Running needs little more than a good pair of shoes and some open road, which makes it one of the easiest ways to get fitter. It strengthens your heart and lungs, supports healthy bones and clears your mind. The secret to sticking with it is to start slower than you think you need to and let your body adapt one step at a time.

Begin with walk and run intervals

Instead of running until you are out of breath, alternate short, easy jogs with brisk walking breaks. Over the following weeks, gradually lengthen the running parts and shorten the walks. This gentle approach builds fitness while giving your muscles, tendons and joints time to grow stronger.

Get the basics right

Choose comfortable running shoes that suit your feet, and replace them when the cushioning wears out. Keep your posture tall, your shoulders relaxed and your steps light and quick. Run on softer surfaces such as trails or tracks when you can, and always warm up with a few minutes of walking and leg swings.

Make it a habit, not a chore

Plan your runs at the same times each week so they become part of your routine. Run with a friend, join a local group or create a playlist you love. Notice how you feel after each run and celebrate progress, whether that is running further, feeling more relaxed or simply enjoying the fresh air.

Every runner started with a single step. Go slow, stay patient and the miles will come to you.

Your first running routine

Follow these steps to start running the smart way:

  • Warm up with brisk walking and leg swings

  • Keep your pace gentle enough to chat
  • Rest or cross-train between running days
  • Stretch your calves and hips afterwards
