Find Your Cardio Sweet Spot: Training Smarter for a Stronger Heart

Cardio exercise strengthens your heart, improves your circulation and helps manage blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. But many people either push too hard every session and burn out, or stay so comfortable that their fitness never improves. Learning to train at the right intensity helps you get fitter, safer and with far more enjoyment.

Use the talk test

The simplest way to judge intensity is to listen to your breathing. At an easy pace you can chat in full sentences. At a moderate pace you can speak in short phrases but would not want to sing. At a hard pace you can only manage a word or two. Most of your weekly cardio should feel easy to moderate, with short bursts of harder work mixed in.

Mix steady sessions and intervals

Steady sessions such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming build your endurance and teach your heart to work efficiently. Intervals, where you alternate short harder efforts with gentle recovery, build speed and power. Combining both styles keeps workouts interesting and gives your heart a complete training plan.

Listen to your body

Feeling tired after a workout is normal, but chest pain, unusual shortness of breath, dizziness or a racing heartbeat that will not settle are signs to stop and seek medical advice. A heart check with your doctor is a wise first step if you are new to exercise, returning after a long break or living with a health condition.

The best cardio plan is the one you enjoy enough to repeat. Consistency will always beat intensity.

Heart-smart cardio habits

Build these habits into your routine for a stronger heart:

  • Warm up gently before every session
  • Keep most workouts at a conversational pace
  • Add short intervals once you feel ready
  • Cool down slowly and stretch afterwards
  • Book a heart check if you have any concerns
Coach's tip

A wearable fitness tracker can help you notice patterns, but your breathing and how you feel are just as reliable. Trust both.

Your heart is a muscle, and like any muscle it grows stronger with the right kind of training. Find your sweet spot, keep moving and let our cardio team support you with checks and a plan made just for you.
